A major milestone has been reached on North East Link Tunnels in Melbourne, with diaphragm wall (D-wall) construction completed across all project sites.
In total, 1,168 D-walls have been built, using almost 225,000 m3 of concrete – the equivalent of 90 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Construction of these deep-walled foundations took almost three years. This method of construction enabled safe excavation in complex ground conditions. These structures form the walls for the tunnel on- and off-ramps that connect key interchanges along the North East Link route. Lower Plenty Road, Manningham and Bulleen tunnel box structures have required D-walls.
This milestone is a critical step in delivering North East Link’s twin tunnels, which will improve travel times, reduce congestion and create more connected, resilient communities.
