Construction of the North East Link Tunnels’ ventilation structure is well underway in Watsonia, led by GS E&C Australia and the Spark consortium.
The structure will play a critical role in tunnel operations by safely dispersing vehicle emissions, ensuring air quality inside the tunnels remains safe for drivers.
When completed, the facility will be integrated into the surrounding landscape with new plantings, trees and green buffers designed to soften its visual impact. It will also connect with new parklands planned for Watsonia.
In a nod to local heritage, the structure’s design is inspired by traditional Wurundjeri eel nets, giving it a distinctive cultural identity.
Crews have been working since the start of the year to prepare the site, with more than 200 building wall panels to be installed. The vent structure is a vital part of the project, ensuring air is safe for road users and the surrounding community when the tunnels open in 2028.
